THE TEAM
Founded by Michael (Mike) Matthews over two decades ago, Michael Matthews & Associates has evolved into Matthews Enslin Inc. Over the years, we have expanded into a thriving and successful firm, now boasting a team of five skilled professionals.
MIKE MATTHEWS – BPROC (UCT)
After spending the first part of his life in Zimbabwe, Mike studied at UCT and qualified in 1983. After 12 successful years in partnership at C & A Friedlander, Mike formed his own practice in 1997.
Mike specialises in commercial law and disputes, High Court litigation, Labour Law, Wills and the Administration of Deceased Estates.
When he is not working, his hobbies include doting over his grandchildren, mountain-biking, creative writing and motorcycling.
DAMIAN ENSLIN – BA LLB (UNISA)
Damian is a qualified Attorney, Notary, and Conveyancer who has been a partner at Matthews Enslin Inc. since 2004. With a deep commitment to client service, he brings extensive expertise in conveyancing and property law, covering freehold and sectional title ownership, as well as mortgage bond registrations.
Damian also works closely with international clients, offering clear, practical advice on South African property transactions, cross-border compliance issues, and local regulatory requirements. His ability to bridge jurisdictions with clarity and confidence has made him a trusted advisor to clients abroad.
In addition to his property law practice, Damian has developed a strong specialisation in legal matters related to the Firearms Control Act of 2000. He assists clients with firearm licence applications, appeals, and the accreditation of sports shooting bodies and businesses. Security companies also rely on his guidance for compliance matters and licensing requirements.
Outside of his legal practice, Damian is an avid hiker and a true firearm fundi, combining his passion for the outdoors with his in-depth knowledge of firearm regulations.
DAVID SZÖKE – LLB (UNISA)
David is a qualified Attorney, Notary, and Conveyancer. He joined Matthews Enslin Inc. in 2021 and has served as a director since early 2023. His areas of expertise include litigation, property and rental law, commercial matters, and regulatory compliance.
David has particular experience in navigating complex regulatory environments, with a focus on the Firearms Control Act, the private security sector, and liquor licensing. He regularly advises clients on licence applications, appeals, and compliance, offering clear, strategic advice grounded in practical outcomes.
Known for his pragmatic and results-oriented approach, David is committed to delivering legal solutions that are tailored, effective, and commercially sound.
Outside of work, David is a passionate musician, avid motorcyclist, and keen sport shooter. He brings the same focus, precision, and discipline to his personal pursuits as he does to his legal practice – qualities his clients have come to rely on.
NATALIE PRETORIUS – BA LLB (SU)
Natalie joined Matthews Enslin Inc in 2023 as a candidate attorney after completing her BA Law and LLB degrees at Stellenbosch University. With a strong foundation in law and a genuine passion for client service, she focuses on both the personal and commercial dimensions of legal practice.
Natalie is particularly passionate about family law, where she brings empathy, clarity, and a practical mindset to often sensitive and emotionally charged matters. On the commercial side, Natalie has developed a niche in advising on the formation and structuring of new business ventures. From tailored shareholder arrangements and foreign loan approvals to company registrations and restructures, she provides strategic advice to her clients. She regularly engages with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), assisting clients with corporate compliance to ensure their businesses are sound, efficient, and future-ready.
Outside of work, Natalie finds joy in spending time with family and friends. A passionate runner and theatre enthusiast, she brings energy and enthusiasm to everything she does, both in and out of the office.
Maria Ortelee – BA LLB (UCT)
Maria Ortelee completed her BA and LLB at the University of Cape Town before joining Matthews Enslin as a candidate attorney in 2025. With a strong work ethic and a dedication to the legal profession, she is committed to continuous learning and professional growth.
Curious, committed, and passionate, Maria thrives in areas of law that demand critical thinking and close analysis. She has a particular interest in administrative law and enjoys applying her mind to complex legal problems.
Her welcoming demeanour and thoughtful approach to legal work make her a valuable member of the team, always eager to learn and contribute meaningfully to client matters.
Outside of her legal pursuits, Maria enjoys staying active and engaged. Whether she’s hiking through scenic landscapes, camping under the stars, or dancing to great music, she embraces the joy of adventure. Performing allows her to express her creativity, while unwinding with a glass of wine and immersing herself in a good book or her own writing provides balance. As an avid Formula One fan, Maria is drawn to the excitement and speed of the sport.
MATT Pretorius – BA LLB (SU)
Matt is a qualified Attorney and Consultant at Matthews Enslin Inc., with a strong academic foundation, holding a BA in International Studies and an LLB from Stellenbosch University. He brings expertise in Conveyancing, Property Law, and Contract Law, with a developing focus on Tax Law and the evolving legal landscape of Cryptocurrency. Matt provides strategic legal solutions to both local and international clients, with a particular strength in navigating complex, multidisciplinary matters.
At Matthews Enslin Inc., Matt is known for his analytical mindset, meticulous attention to detail, and commitment to delivering practical, results-driven advice. His role as Consultant allows him to support clients across a wide spectrum of property and commercial transactions, helping them make informed decisions in a dynamic legal environment.
